Excursions in Cajamarca

Hiking Peru - Cusco, Peru

Map of Cusco

Cajamarca

Cajamarca: a beautiful colonial town at 2750m, one of the biggest cities in Inca time, the place where Pizarro captured the Inca Atahualpa.

Cumbe Mayo, a pampa on a mountain range, famous for its extraordinary well-engineered pre-Inca channels, said to be the oldest man-made construction in South America. The area also has a lot of petroglyphs, altars and sacrificial stones.

Baños del Inca: warm sulphurous thermal springs in the village with the same name, 6km from Cajamarca.

Ventanillas de Otuzco, part of an old pre-Inca cemetery with burial niches. You can walk from the Ventanillas to the Baños del Inca in about 1½ hour.

Around Cajamarca you can find ceramics in Aylambo

From Cajamarca it takes a minimum of 4 or 5 days to visit the remote area of the Chachapoyas “Cloud People” with the ruins of Kuelap near Tingo and lots of other archaeological sites around.
