CODE: hike-09
Program: 5 days / 4 nights
CIRCUIT: CACHORA – CHOQUEQUIRAO – CACHORA
The most direct route to visit the famous and beautiful but remote archaeological site of CHOQUEQUIRAO , entering through the village of Cachora.
A hike for the really good hikers! Or you go on horseback (optional).
Itinerary:
1st day: Pick up from your hotel in Cusco and transfer to Cachora. Possibly visit of the archaeological site of Sayhuite. Then on to the village of Cachora. Here you start de trail, already near the Apurimac canyon. It’s only walking down until the bridge that crosses the Apurimac canyon but the descend is about 1600 m. The camp is near the bridge, called playa Rosalina, or 1 hour before in Chiquiska.
2nd day: From the camp, after crossing the bridge, you have to climb all your way to the ruins, the first 3 hours being very steep! But the views are spectacular! Deep down is the canyon and there can be condors around. You enter the ruins late in the afternoon.
3rd day: Take your time to visit the place! Choquequirao was an important Inca site! It is the remotest of the major sites on a ridge spur amongst 1800m above the Apurimac river.
It is suggested to have been the place where the last Inca Tupac Amaru was raised among Inca priestesses (Gary Ziegler). Another suggestion is that it was built as a’ royal estate’ for Topa Inca, son of Pachacutec (Vincent Lee).
4th day: Walk into the Apurimac valley, you can have a caña (alcoholic drink made of sugarcane) in Santa Rosa, cross the Apurimac river. You can have a swim here…
Camp here or 1 hour up in Chiquiska.
5th day: It takes about 6-7 hours to reach the village of Cachora and there is an other pass to cross, so a lot of climbing to do…
Be prepared: there is no water in about 4-5 hours!!!!!
After the last climb your transport is waiting for you to bring you back to Cusco.
