Departamento del Sureste peruano con área de 88,000 km2 creado en 1912. También es el nombre de un importante afluente del Amazonas. El desarrollo de esta remota región selvática se inicio con la explotación del caucho a fines del s. XIX. Carlos Fermín Fitzcarrald, este fue uno de los mas celebres caucheros, descubrió un paso fluvial entre los ríos Madre de Dios y Ucayali, poco después perdió la vida en el Urubamba. En épocas recientes Madre de Dios ha cobrado fama internacional por la riqueza de sus áreas naturales protegidas.
